Frequently asked questions

Who are these training courses for?

Our training courses are designed for health practitioners. They offer a functional medicine approach to various topics. Health practitioners from many different backgrounds have benefited from our courses, including health coaches, dieticians, naturopaths, chiropractors, and medical doctors.

Who teaches the courses?

All of the training courses available on this website are taught by Lisa Pomeroy, ND.

How are the courses delivered?

Our courses are delivered on-demand, so you can log in and access the content at any time. All courses include video presentations (with Lisa teaching the material using detailed PowerPoint slides), a PDF of the slide deck (which includes all of the slides shown during the video presentations), a comprehensive "Practitioner's Desk Reference Guide" eBook, and various handouts (depending on the course).

What makes Pomeroy Institute For Functional Nutrition's training courses different than other courses out there?

  • Available "a la carte": We understand that many practitioners today are interested in learning more about one specific topic or lab test and prefer to customize their training according to their particular wants and needs. With our "a la carte" training courses, practitioners have the flexibility to choose whichever individual topics and tests they want to focus on instead of having to purchase a larger, more expensive full course.
  • Contain cutting-edge material: Lisa is continually attending conferences and seminars to expand her knowledge, so she incorporates all the latest information she gains into her training courses. Our courses are a compilation of information Lisa has learned over the years from numerous training courses, conferences, seminars, books, webinars, podcasts, online summits, her personal experience trying to recover her own health, her professional experience as a traditional naturopath and laboratory consultant, and a lot of research (hours and hours of digging through studies on pubmed).
  • Provide advanced-level content: We know that you're probably like us and have been disappointed by training courses that over-promised and under-delivered. Many of these courses sounded great on paper but ended up being very basic. They didn't dive deep into complex topics, tell you how to incorporate functional lab testing, explain how to interpret functional lab testing, or give you specific recommendations on creating individualized lab-guided nutritional protocols for your clients. At the end of the day, you're left with very little that you can begin to implement right away with your clients. As practitioners, we need information that's at a higher level than the kind of "entry-level" information you can get from surfing the internet or listening to free online summits. With each topic in our information-packed courses, we take a logical "A to Z" step-by-step approach. We lay the groundwork and then take it to the next level by giving you information we consider "need to know," information we consider "fascinating to know," little "clinical pearls" we've gathered throughout years of clinical experience, useful "tips" we've learned from personal experience, and actionable steps on how to use this information in your practice. Lisa is known for her ability to simplify the complex, so while she does cite numerous research studies and go over anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry in the courses, this is done in a way that makes sense and ties into the other information. We find that some courses get a bit too bogged down by the science and research, so we try to present this information in a manner that's relatable and applicable. We may use some fancy technical terms, but not just for the sake of throwing them around and make your eyes glaze over - we explain what they mean and why they're important.
  • Are very comprehensive: Since the motto of functional medicine is, "Test, Don't Guess," our training courses teach you the fundamentals about a particular topic and then show you how to test your clients for this to see if it may be a contributing factor for them. And, because we believe in always trying to uncover the root cause behind an issue, we discuss what may have led to the problem in the first place. Then, we provide you with actionable solutions to help resolve these issues - dietary and lifestyle recommendations, supplement suggestions, and possible natural therapies to consider. Most of our training courses feature one specific lab test that we particularly like that ties in with the topic we're teaching in that course, so we can provide you with an incredibly in-depth look at this test. We review this lab test in great detail - marker-by-marker - so you know all the in's and out's of that test, but can also apply that knowledge to other similar tests with the same markers. Numerous examples of actual lab reports are shown during the course, so you are able to see "real world" examples.
  • Give you a "Practitioner's Desk Reference Guide" eBook: Although some courses provide you with a short practitioner handout or a print-out of the slides with some bullet-pointed highlights of information taught in the course, we give you a comprehensive "Practitioner's Reference Guide" eBook. Since most courses aren't accompanied by an eBook, you won't have all the information written down anywhere unless you did an incredibly good job of taking notes while listening to the video presentations. We don't want you to have to search through hours of video or audio to try to find some key bit of information or what supplement we recommend in a certain situation, so we have given you a detailed manual which contains all the material taught in the course. We expect this guide will quickly become your "go-to" source to quickly look up information on a topic, and that you'll find yourself referring to it time and time again. These reference guides typically take us a year or more to write, so each one is a well-researched, footnoted, full-sized book. Each course has its own eBook, available as a downloadable PDF. Some courses include "done-for-you" client handouts that are ready to use right away with your clients. We've tried to save you the time and effort of having to create them yourself.
  • Get into specifics: In our courses, we tell you which particular functional laboratories we like for testing as well as which supplement products we like. Maybe you're like us and have been frustrated by courses that don't provide you with this information - making it hard to get the same results in your own practice. Or, you've attended conferences that offered continuing education credits, only to discover that it is against the rules for the presenters at these conferences to mention the specific labs/supplements they like. Presenters have to purposefully be extremely vague ("I used an herbal product - let's called it 'Compound A'") to avoid breaking the rules. Because we recognize that quality varies from lab to lab and from supplement to supplement, we feel it's essential to provide you with specifics, so you obtain the best possible results with your clients. Additionally, we know that not every supplement or supplement protocol works for every client, so we always try to provide you with multiple protocol options. We also teach you how to design your own protocols. That way, if your client has an allergy or sensitivity to a particular herb, has a reaction to a certain product, or simply doesn't respond to a protocol, you have other options to try. You never know when a particular product may be backordered or discontinued either. Not every course does this. Some provide you with just a single protocol for an issue with no alternatives. We feel it's best to always have a "Plan B" - and even a "Plan C"...just in case.... It's our belief that the more "tools" in your tool box, the better!
  • Support all learning styles: We know that everyone learns a little differently, so all of our training courses include video content (for those who learn best by seeing something), audio content (for those who learn best by hearing something), and written content (for those who learn best by having something they can read through and highlight). And, our presentation slides are quite detailed - we're not a fan of slides that only consist of one large picture/graphic or only have a handful of words. We try to maximize your retention by having you see and hear the information at the same time.
  • Allow you to learn at your own pace: All of the lessons within the training course are immediately available for you after you purchase a course (unless otherwise specified). We know that some practitioners are eager to move onto the next lesson, so we don't slow you down by dripping the content out over weeks or months. If you want to "binge-watch" the training, go ahead and enjoy!
  • Priced competitively: There are a lot of great courses out there that unfortunately are not within the budget of many practitioners. Most courses with similar video content are priced at least 2 to 3 times higher than our courses. We have tried to make our training courses available at a price that's comparable to that of many weekend continuing education conferences, making them more affordable for a larger number of practitioners. And, you can take our courses from the comfort of your own home - no airfare or hotel required!

How long do I have access to a course once I purchase it?

Although many courses only give you 1 year (or less) to access your course before your access expires, we do NOT have an expiration date on how long you have to access your course. We can't say you'll have "lifetime" access to a course, because it's to difficult to define what lifetime access really means, but as long as we have the course available online, you will have access to it. Plus, most of the content included in our courses can be downloaded to your hard drive, essentially giving you lifetime access to the materials (pdf's of the "Practitioner's Reference Guide," slides, and handouts).

While we don't have plans to suspend your access to a course after a set amount of time, if we decide to discontinue a course at some point in the future and it will no longer be available to access, we will notify you in advance so you can make sure to view any unwatched lessons and save any materials you want to keep.

Will taking your courses allow me to order these lab tests?

Whether or not you can order the tests discussed in our courses depends on your credentials as a health practitioner and whether you qualify for an account directly with those laboratories or with a company that distributes those tests.

All of our courses are for education purposes only; they do not provide any sort of certification that allows practitioners to order tests. So, taking our GI-MAP course or DUTCH course has no impact on a practitioner's ability to order the GI-MAP test or DUTCH test, for example.

Can I use these courses for continuing education credits?

Because we mention specific lab tests and supplements in our courses, they are not eligible for continuing education credits through most organizations.

What about course updates?

Our courses do not come with a guarantee that they will be updated at some point in the future; however, if we DO update a course, you will have access to all updates and new materials automatically.*

Because new research is continually being conducted, laboratories may add new markers to their tests, and new innovative supplements get released, we may decide to update some of the content in our courses or add some additional content (such as videos about markers recently added to a lab test). If we do make any updates to our courses, we will replace the previous video/audio recording, reference guide ebook, or handout with the new version or add any new videos, handouts, etc, which you will see when you log in and access your course.

* Please note that this only applies to courses purchased directly through us, and not to courses purchased through other websites, as we no longer have control over those courses.

What is your refund policy for courses?

Since our training courses are digital products which consist of downloadable materials, we are unable to offer refunds. We treat digital, downloadable materials in the same way most professional audio and book retailers offer their products. It is an industry standard not to offer refunds on the products since they are downloaded and viewed. Please see our Terms of Use for full details (

What if I have questions as I go through the course or need additional help after the course?

Our courses are pretty comprehensive, but if you have questions that weren't answered in the course, Lisa is available for 1-on-1 consultations, which you can schedule through this website.

What is the difference between Lisa's courses available here and courses Lisa created that are available through other websites?

Before 2017, when Lisa started offering her courses exclusively through Pomeroy Institute For Functional Nutrition, Lisa developed courses for other organizations, including Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN). All of the courses available on this website are Lisa's newest courses and were created in 2017 or later. Courses available through other sites (i.e. FDN Advanced) were created before 2017

Some of the courses available on this website have similar topics to courses Lisa has developed in the past, because information, recommendations, and/or lab tests have changed since she created those courses. Since Lisa has no control over courses she created in the past, some of her new courses may discuss lab tests and topics she has covered in the past, but contain new information. For example, after she created the "Stress & Hormones" course (on the DUTCH Test), Precision Analytical added several new markers to the test. Lisa wanted to educate practitioners about these new markers, so she created a new course on the DUTCH Test which includes detailed information on these markers. As a result, the DUTCH Test course offered through this website contains 34 hours of videos and a 480 page Reference Guide, whereas the "Stress & Hormones" course she developed contained 14 hours of videos and a 240+ page Reference Guide.
